News You Can Use II: $4 Million in New Grants for Independent Restaurants, Here’s What to Know
Two new funding programs aim to help small restaurants recover, rebuild, and keep doing what they do best.
Independent restaurants just got a little backup. The Independent Restaurant Coalition (IRC) has teamed up with Chase to launch a multi-year partnership that includes $4 million in grants for small, independently owned restaurants and bars across the country.
There are two tracks for support:
The Innovator Awards – Applications are now open for restaurants that are doing more than just serving food. Think: sustainable practices, sourcing locally, supporting staff well-being, and generally being a good neighbor. There’s $1 million on the table for places making a positive impact in their communities.
The Disaster Relief Fund – Opening September 3, this fund sets aside $3 million for restaurants recovering from natural disasters—whether it’s flooding, wildfires, hurricanes, or ice storms. If a restaurant’s been hit hard in the last year, this could help with rebuilding, replacing inventory, or covering temporary operating costs.
The fine print? Applicants must be independently owned and have fewer than 20 locations. No chains or franchises. And you’ll need to show how your business was directly affected (for the relief fund) or how you're making an impact (for the innovator grants).
The IRC points out that restaurants often serve their communities long before anyone asks, feeding first responders, supporting local causes, and acting as hubs of connection. These grants aim to return the favor.
