2019 Manna Food Center's Montgomery County Community Food Rescue Week

Celebrate the power of community to eliminate hunger in Montgomery County! Learn what our innovative Community Food Rescue (CFR) network of businesses, volunteers, and hunger relief organizations is doing to end hunger and food waste. Find out what you can do at home and at work to feed more and waste less! Join for the following events that make up the week. Koiner Farm Tour and Compost Demonstration, October 20, 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., 737 Easley Street, Silver Spring, MD. Take a family friendly tour of Koiner Farm, a non-profit production and educational farm, and learn more about composting from local experts. You’ll have a chance to win a basket of farm goods and MoCo Made products in a raffle to benefit Koiner Farm. To register, please click here.  Gleaning Apples at Butler’s Orchard, October 21, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., 22222 Davis Mill Road, Germantown, MD. Join MoCo Master Gardeners to glean apples at Butler’s Orchard. Later in the week volunteers will be baking the apples into delicious dishes for CFR network nonprofit organizations that provide food to those experiencing hunger (and there will be samples to share at CFRW events!) Join STEP Chef Scott Ulen, MoCo Food Council and KindWorks to turn recovered food into delicious and nutritious meals to be donated to CFR Partner organizations. To sign up click here. True Respite Food Rescue Happy Hour, October 23, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., True Respite, 7301 Calhoun Pacel, Derwood, MD. Mix and mingle with foodies and food advocates who support our local food system, promote food security and fight food waste. We’ll be recognizing volunteers and this year’s CFR mini-grant awardees. Enjoy local beer, wine, kombucha, and soda and taste delicious food made by CFR Cooks! $10 includes appetizers and first drink. To register please click here.  No Waste, Big Taste Cooking Competition, October 26, 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Fresh Farm Silver Spring Farm Market, 890 Ellsworth Drive, Silver Spring, MD. CFR Week ends with an epic showdown between two teams of local chefs and sous chefs. Watch as they compete to prepare the tastiest two-course meal using a mystery basket of recovered food.
