One of the United States’ most recognizable and celebrated culinary traditions is that of the Gullah communities located on the Sea Islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia. With deep roots in West African and Caribbean culinary cultures, the Gullah use ancestral growing, fishing, and other culinary practices to sustain their communities. How have rising sea levels and other environmental changes impacted the lives of Gullah community members? How are they pairing traditional knowledge and modern innovations to address these issues? How are Gullah communities sustaining culinary traditions in the face of additional social, cultural, and economic changes taking hold throughout the Lowcountry? Join guest chef Sallie Ann Robinson as she shares stories and perspectives from her home on Daufuskie Island, South Carolina.
