Ring in the New Year at Lincoln Memorial
2 Lincoln Memorial Circle NW
On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, declaring “that all persons held as slaves” within rebel states “are, and henceforward shall be free.” Join the National Bell Festival on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to commemorate this inflection point in American history and to reflect on 160 years of civil rights progress. Here's what to expect:
160 distinct tolls will resound across the Memorial. With each reverberation, we get nearer the promise of our Declaration of Independence, that all men are created equal – a potential, even now, not fully realized. This is an outdoor event. Please bundle-up and dress appropriately for the weather. No tickets are necessary, but registration required here; event will begin at 2:30 p.m. For more details, click here.
