THE URBAN GRAPE

Openings

1301 9th Street NW

Husband-wife duo, TJ and Hadley Douglas, have opened the first location of their progressive wine shop, The Urban Grape, outside of Boston in DC's Shaw neighborhood. As America's largest certified black-owned beverage retailer, The Urban Grape curates wine, beer, and spirits with an emphasis on representation for diverse makers, regions, and varietals. At The Urban Grape, TJ and Hadley developed a Progressive Scale, their propriety system that categorizes wine by its body instead of varietal or region. By using this scale, The Urban Grape prioritizes exploration. The 4,300 square-foot location is much larger than its Boston location, and will act as the distribution hub for the brand.
