Sake, a Japanese alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice, is a category in the wine and spirits industry that is exploding in popularity. While often referred to as "rice wine," sake shares more similarities in the brewing process of beer, with some key differences. There is so much to learn about this ancient drink. Izumibashi was founded in 1857 and is located in the Kanagawa prefecture in Japan, just south of Tokyo. Izumibashi has long taken advantage of the area’s natural bounty, from abundant fertile land for rice growing to the natural waterflow from Mt. Tanazawa. Believing that good sake is made with good rice, they are one of the few breweries in Japan that polish and grow their own sake-rice. To this day, they continue their growth as a cultivation brewery, with respect for the rice-growing and sake-making skills those before them have passed down, so that they might pass these traditions on to the generations to come. All Izumibashi sake is made to the highest of standards and contains no gluten, preservatives, or additives. Join Calvert Woodley Fine Wines and Spirits at their upcoming tasting of three of Izumibashi's premium sakes and their plum wine (Umeshu). There will be two fantastic speakers who will walk you through the tasting: Sara Guterbock Nelis, who holds a Diploma in Sake from the Japan Sommelier Association and is a Certified Sake Adviser, and Kayoko Abe, who is a certified International Sake Sommelier and brand ambassador for Izumibashi Shuzo Co., Ltd. Please note that in order to keep the sake fresh for the tasting, the samples will be available for pickup Tuesday, April 5th through Thursday, April 7th. The tasting will be virtual on Zoom on Thursday, April 7th, 6:00 p.m. EST. For more information, please click here.
