First Runnings Special Edition: New Perspectives, Lessons Learned, And The Future Of Beer

When:
September 24,2020 – September 24,2020 all-day
Where:
Heurich House Museum
1307 New Hampshire Avenue NW

First Runnings is an interview series at the Heurich House, hosted by BYT Beer Editor, Phil Runco. In brewing nomenclature, “first runnings” refers to the heavy, concentrated wort extracted from the mash, prior to rinsing the grain with more water (or “sparging”) to wash out the residual sugars. So, the first runnings is the super-rich sugar water. It’s the good stuff. The concept of this event is pretty simple: First Runnings will consist of conversations with the area’s best brewers in the intimate, historic space that was once home to the area’s most distinguished brewer. Phil Runco will lead a discussion of all things current in the beer industry: the good, the bad, and the unexpected. Every brewery in the nation has been deeply affected by COVID-19 and some have pivoted in completely unique ways. What new strategies have developed and what lessons have been learned? Listen to professionals in the industry discuss the trials, creative solutions, surprising silver linings, and their visions of the future. What is the new reality of the brewing world? Here’s what you need to know about the happy hour live stream: bring your own chairs or picnic blankets to sit on, seating is extremely limited, so feel free to arrive anytime after 5:00 p.m. to grab a spot since it’s first come first served; beer, water, and snacks will be available for purchase, although you can bring in outside food; you will be required to wear a mask and be socially distant from those outside of your group; in case the garden is a bit loud (unfortunately the sound of Dupont Circle or nearby traffic can't be controlled) it is suggested to bring headphones and your phone along, that way you can listen to the discussion through your phone while still enjoying the big screen; the outdoor live stream is entirely weather dependant, so in case of rain it will, unfortunately, have to be canceled. This event is free, but a donation of $15 is requested in support of the Heurich House Museum recovery fund. The event is from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. To donate or for more information please click here.
