In the spirit of continuing education for beverage professionals and consumers, The SOMM Journal—in association with National Geographic and SommCon—invites you to participate in a one-of-a-kind, wine-tasting webinar series called Geographical Digest. This week, Terroir is a magical word that should never be literally translated. As a concept, it speaks volumes. Terroir encompasses soil composition, solar radiation, wind exposure, diurnal shift, slope of a hill, proximity to – or distance from – bodies of water and masses of rock; vine training, varietal selection, tradition, innovation, and so much more. Terroir endows a unique sense of place to wine. Dialing in from hemisphere to continent to country, region to subregion, estate to parcel. Within each plot, subtle borders may seem imperceptible to the naked eye but their deviations make wines shockingly different to the trained palate. The ultimate example of terroir, that tightest focus, zeroes in on a single vineyard site – one spec of land so different than any other, demarcated by mere inches which stand as a chasm between flavor profiles. Join us in our exploration of these microcosms that take us to literal corners of the earth, near and far, and those rarest of wines. This is event is free and the exact time it goes live is TBD.
