Nationals Park Partners With World Central Kitchen To Distribute Meals
The Washington Nationals are partnering with World Central Kitchen to utilize Nationals Park as a cooking/distribution site for thousands of free meals. The free meals will be distributed using WCK and Nationals Philanthropies (the new name for the team’s philanthropic arm), community partners working in the public housing residences located in the Navy Yard/Wharf neighborhood and Fort Dupont.
Realizing that Nationals Park is uniquely suited to large-scale food production and is located in the heart of an at-risk community, the Washington Nationals worked with Events DC to obtain permission to have several kitchens within the ballpark available for use by World Central Kitchen. Once fully ramped up, the operation at Nationals Park will be producing tens of thousands of meals each day.
The Nationals have been in the food insecurity space for several years. Their programming at the Youth Baseball Academy provides meals to scholar-athletes, a weekly free/reduced fee fresh produce market for the community, community cooking and nutrition classes and a community garden. Nationals Park partners with Nourish Now to distribute food from their kitchen at the end of every homestand to local low-income families.
Additionally, the YBA has been distributing meals and produce bags to their athletes since the closing of DC Public Schools. 1500 South Capitol Street SE; (https://wck.org/chefsforamerica)
