Seder Celebrations
Photo: Nycci Nellis
The holiday of Passover sets in motion 8 days of celebrating the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt and also consuming mass quantities of Matzah in a variety of forms -- slathered with butter, mushed into a ball, dipped in egg and fried, layered in a kugel -- so much Matzah. The first night's Seder is March 27th and when we tell you it doesn't matter if you are cooking for 2 or 20 - it's a tremendous task. DC Area restaurants, hotels & caterers to the rescue, natch. You know the drill -- as we learn of Passover promos -- we will update them here:
More Matzah, More Mitzvahs
For the fourth year, Baked by Yael are distributing Rabbi Kestenbaum's gluten-free oat matzah as well as handmade wheat matzah from the famous Pupa Tzelim Bakery in Brooklyn, NY. If you are gluten-free and observant, this is a rare opportunity. What appears at first like gluten-free matzah in grocery stores is usually matzah-style crackers (i.e. not real matzah). If you're a wheat eater, Pupa Tzelim's handmade matzah is a wonderful addition to your Seder. The matzah they carry is shmurah and their products are made in-house and are certified kosher. 3000 Connecticut Avenue NW; bakedbyyael.com

Sixth & I Hosts Pop-Up Food Distribution Sites for Passover
Every year, families gather around the seder table and begin the retelling of the Passover story by declaring, “Let all who are hungry come and eat.” In this spirit, Sixth & I has partnered with Dreaming Out Loud and other community-based organizations to host pop-up food distribution sites that will support our neighbors throughout the Washington, DC community. Food insecurity is at an all-time high globally and locally as a result of the pandemic. At two locations in DC, volunteers will distribute meat and vegetarian meals, soup, CSA produce bags, and dessert to individuals and families looking for a fresh meal. Food plays a central role in the Passover seder, from the matzah (the bread of poverty) uncovered on the table to the parsley symbolizing hope and renewal. For many Jews, the holiday serves as a call to action and a reminder to take care of our communities.
